End of june i spent a week in Kauai, the magical island where movies like Jurassic park, Indiana Jones, King Kong and others were filmed, this is a video to remember the experience :) I also experimented by filming it entirely with a Canon ELPH 300HS, a new tiny canon camera the size of a credit card that costs just around $200, amazing technology :)
Did tons of walking, exploring and hiking in the island, wish i could have stayed there longer ;)

Locations include

- Kalahau trail, Hanakapi`ai
- Awaawapuhi Trail
- Alakai Swamp Trail & Pihea Trail
- Napali Coast
- Kauai Aadheenam, also known as Kauai’s Hindu Monastery
- Kapaa coconat market place

Kauaʻi is geologically the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. It is Known also as the “Garden Isle”.
The island of Kauaʻi has been featured in more than seventy Hollywood movies and television shows, including Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones’ Raiders of the Lost Ark, Six Days Seven Nights, the 2005 remake of King Kong, Tropic Thunder, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and many others

Kauai is also a paradise for hiking and enjoying nature, amazing flowers and landscapes :)

Life is all about juggling the many tasks we do every day, so the question every day is: Will they juggle?
Today we try with a Teddy Bear! A Bell Pepper! and a Sleeper! And we travel all the way to the stratosphere to find out while we travel the beautiful blue skies on our colourful balloon. Join us and find out! :)

The teddy bear represents love, Bell pepper = Health, Sleeper = Career, the goofy Birds represent the distractions of life, and the Wind the unexpected changes of direction. So we all have to juggle Love, Health and Career surrounded by distractions and unexpected events and winds that move us towards new directions. Modern life is all about Juggling the many things we have to deal with.

This is an article i wrote that was published by inspiremetoday.com some weeks ago.
The article talks about the roots of creativity and the importance of understanding the code and essence of things instead of remaining at their surface.
The inspiremetoday.com page can be found here: http://www.inspiremetoday.com/luminaryblog/2011/04/depth-and-the-universal-beauty/
_______

Throughout my career as an artist and speaker at conferences, team building events and creative workshops, many people have asked me what´s the secret to working on many different creative fields and still reach a good level of quality in all of them.

The secret is simple, depth.

Imagine you are sitting on the rocks in front of the ocean, looking at the waters. You think you can see something moving down below, some shapes maybe, some colors. You can guess as to what is living down there, what behaviors, events, patterns are beneath those boundaries.
The truth is, as long as you look at that world from the outside you can be right there for years and your understanding will not evolve much.
But in the moment you take the bold step to jump into that water and dive beneath that boundary, everything changes. And it changes fast.

You have moved onto a new level. What was fuzzy and distorted from the outside is now crystal clear. You can feel it, touch it, it is right there in front of your eyes. You don´t need to guess. Suddenly, you have taken a leap in understanding.

The same thing happens with the arts. If we interact with painting, photography, filmmaking, sculpting and other creative disciplines at a shallow level, they seem really opaque, full of secrets that also seem to be uniquely distinct in each of those creative fields.

It is only when we dive right to the deep roots of those art forms, either through the guidance of an expert or our own self-learning, that we discover they all share the same root principles.
At that moment, in the deep silence below the waters, you are confronted with the beauty of lighting, color, shape, form, composition, rhythm.. You realize that once you understand those root principles you can apply them in a very direct way to any of the art forms. That photography, filmmaking, painting, design, music or sculpting are only channels through which you express the generic fundamental principles of rhythm, lighting, composition, color and all the others.

And you can also apply this to every part of your life. Understanding is the key. Understanding can take you further in a day than shallowness in 20 years. It is as dramatic as that.
That is why our aim should not just be to become a great photographer or musician, but to become a great student of life. Always. To become an expert at how light behaves and interacts with us and the world. To become an expert at how our brain and mind interact with time and space.

Leonardo da Vinci was maybe the greatest artist that understood this concept of being a student of life. When you are a student of life, the boundaries between art and science disappear. All boundaries in fact, disappear. And what remains is the universal beauty of life, the foundations that make possible this miracle we all go through.

Understanding that beauty allows you to truly become an artist of life and apply that beauty through any number of channels you want to explore.

Last saturday i directed another art performance on the sand.
Together with Sonia, Niru, Patrick and Wen, we explored new techniques and directions, using elements from everybody’s daily lifes to add ornaments to the portrait.

The performance had to finish early because of a huge storm that fell on us :) So we couldn’t fully complete it, however we did enough to confirm the success of the new techniques we tried.
Here a little summary video

Inspiremetoday.com published the following article of mine a few weeks ago.
you can find it at inspiremetoday.com here: http://www.inspiremetoday.com/archiveDisp.php?type=0&ref=1116

Inspiremetoday.com asked me to reflect about the words i would like to communicate if today was my last day on earth. This is the article:

____

Look at the shining sun, listen to the singing water, feel the unpredictable wind. Are those ever completely still? Not really. They are in fact always in movement, always flowing. Anything that is alive is always moving and changing. And so are you.

Whatever your circumstances are, they are already changing, right now. And in what direction? That depends entirely on you. Every single thought that crosses your mind, every single action you take is the foundation of who you will be right around the corner.

That’s why, whatever you are feeling today, remember that you are already becoming somebody else, moving in the direction you choose through the thoughts and actions you perform now, right now.

Most of our frustrations in life arise when we try to block, stop or go against the natural everchanging flow of life. That is in fact the opposite of creativity. As an artist i have learnt that the essence of creativity is flowing with your own soul and nature.

You are a beautiful whisper of the earth, whose natural behaviour is to explore, to learn, to experience, to engage, to change, to evolve.

We often attempt to block this process by for example wishing for a person never to change (because we like that person right as he/she is today), by wishing for us never to change (because we fear the consequences of change), by wishing to control the flow of life and set it exactly as we like it today and keep it that way forever.

The fact is, thats not possible. And the more we try in that direction the more unhappy we feel because we are fighting against something much larger and bigger and powerful than us, life.

The answer to this challenge is in recognizing our true nature and flowing with it. When we understand that every single part of us, from our smallest cells to our deepest thoughts are constantly changing, we can then relax and enjoy our true nature, swimming along with it and discovering the amazing variety, richness and infinite joy we can find all around us when we are truly there engaged with what is going on at every moment.

Some people fear that love and other valuable things are in danger because of this everchanging reality of life. It is in fact the opposite. Those things that are rigid and never move are the ones that crack and break easily. Those that flow and move continuously are also the ones that are most resilient and last longer. Start looking around, reconnect with life, from the trees to the skycrapers, all of them move to adapt to the winds or the earthquakes. Love is also movement and only in movement it can thrive, grow and last.

By realizing that like the wind, like the trees, like the sun, you are constantly evolving and flowing, second by second, you will discover that every one of those moments is different and full of amazing opportunities and joy that are right there for you to interact with.

You are an artist. Yes. You are. Because your life is your art, and if you truly engage with it, your life itself will be the most beautiful artistic work you will have ever seen

These days i am preparing the next art performance for Drawing for Peace. In Drawing for Peace we create giant drawings on the sand of beaches around the world.
We were aiming to do another performance last week but rain has been pouring down non stop in San Francisco. Hopefully we will be able to get back to it very soon :)
At Drawing for Peace we bring people together to collaborate on art projects where they can forget their frustrations and focus on working with others and building step by step something much larger than themselves. It’s all about Art, peace and life.

These days i am preparing the new edition of a very exciting travel photo workshop.
If there is one type of photography that we all share and practice is travel photography. Be it on our holidays or business trips, today more than ever we have infinite chances to take good
photography when we are on the move.

Even mobile phones are incorporating more and more advanced manual controls that are bringing them into the set of tools we can use to perform photo shoots that approach professional setups.
On this workshop we are focusing on a few topics that many travellers wish to try or practice at different times. Our objective is to go deep into them to explain the techniques that we can use to unlock their secrets and mysteries.

Some of them are

Photography of Star Trails
Many people have enjoyed beautiful photography of star trails, now its the time to unlock the techniques to get there. What controls and techniques are best to capture beautiful star trails? What are the different possibilities?
How should we plan such a project? Learn all about the on-camera and off-camera setup you need.

Photography at Volcanoes
Above we can see a photo taken at the amazing Stromboli volcano near Sicily, Italy (Stromboli vulcano in italian).  What a fantastic place to do photography in front of a live eruption. Volcanoes are a beautiful challenge to tackle. Surrounded by darkness at night, they emit intense light that can saturate the sensors of the camera easily. Learn what are the best strategies to tackle this challenge.

The moon!
All the way to the moon yes, the subject of so much poetry and beautiful stories. The moon reflects the light of the sun and unlike what many think, its intensity is pretty low. Not only that but it is also moving continuously! Learn to tackle this beautiful fleeting and moving subject.

Taking photos of people on challenging situations
While travelling we find people that are running, in movement, under low light, in high contrast midday situations; What techniques and controls are the optimum ones to tackle these situations? we will explore them together.
In addition to this we will talk about other important considerations and strategies that we can apply while we are on the move.
Learning about these topics is not only important because it allows you to take photos of stars or volcanoes, the deeper benefit is that understanding the techniques to take photography in extreme conditions will help you in general to take better photos at all times! This was one of the favourite strategies of Leonardo Da Vinci, to study a topic under extreme conditions in order to fully and totally understand it.

Join us and take your photography to the next level!

Above we can see 3 photos including one taken at the island of Formentera in Spain, near the Barbaria cave, and another showing the curvature of the earth, taken from a plane over the alps on the way to Croatia.

These days our thoughts are with the people of Japan after the tremendous tsunami and earthquake that took place in that beautiful country. As we go on with our daily lifes subconsciously we carry with us a sense of renewed uncertainty brought by the sudden impulsive behaviour of our mother earth.
Even right now, as a storm rages in San Francisco i find myself reflecting about that invisible but permanent human vulnerability in a complex world whose next step we can never predict.

These thoughts even invade some of my kitchen hours. As my friends know i have always loved bread. Since a great friend of mine taught me a bread recipe many years ago in Italy i have enjoyed making my own bread ocasionally. There is something truly special about homemade bread. It is a slow peaceful process that brings you closer with the foundations of food and of your own soul in many ways. I wish i could make a daily bread. Not having time for that i try to make it as often as possible. Last weekend i had the chance to enjoy the process again.

Bread figure of person running away from tsunami warning in Japan
Usually i love making different shapes and masks made of bread. This time i made some simple figures in different postures. This one that i post here is certainly influenced by the tsunami events in Japan. More specifically after i made it it makes me think of a human being running away during a tsunami warning. As i looked at the bread figure i could imagine the sirens, the chaos and the anxiety of so many anonymous humans whose names we have never heard, running away from the tsunami warnings, looking for high ground from which to escape the violent and extremely dangerous waves.

In this dramatic pose in which the wind pulls the clothing and hair of the person we can almost feel what that human being leaves behind as he/she escapes from the rage of mother nature. Humans leaving their homes, their memories, sometimes not running away from the waves but actually running towards them looking for lost members of their families or friends or strangers they seek to help. So many anonymous stories of courage, generosity, care, so many stories of the human being struggling to survive, seeking for the next embrace of our unpredictable blue planet.

This is not a bread that i could eat after i made it. But neither that was needed. For this anonymous figure is already within me, within us these days as we reflect and we send our energy and thoughts to the brave people of Japan.

This month i finished two new fine art photography series. One of them is titled Loneliness.
The central topic of the series is the lonely human figure surrounded by the forces of nature, by the uncertainty that is all around us.
In this sense, it has some things in common with the natural movement series.

The loneliness fine art photography series by ideami

The photos were produced and taken in New Zealand and Greece. The naked body of the figure emphasises further the vulnerability of human beings in relation to the world they inhabit.
At the same time, that fragile and vulnerable human figure becomes a firm statement of harmony and beauty, the one thing that brings the chaotic landscape into a new dimension, the human being giving meaning and depth to the world.

And so, in this tension, in this drama, in this permanent struggle and fight of the human being, we realize that as much as we try to cover ourselves and to make our homes safer and safer, we are still always naked, naked and exposed to the hardships that time and space bring. In that reality resides not only the drama of human existance but also its beauty, for from that struggle come the incredible achievements that these naked humans can reach during their lifetimes. It is the triumph of the creativity of the human spirit.

These days we are having our thoughts with the brave people of Japan that are struggling to recover after a massive and unexpected tsunami and earthquake. The Loneliness series connects well with these terrible events. For in these dramatic moments in which so many brave humans flee from nature’s rage or desperately seek to reunite with their loved ones, we all feel that naked loneliness of the fragile human existence that is constantly facing all sorts of perils and uncertainties.

And yet, after such a massive tsunami and earthquake, after enduring for days more tsunami warnings and earthquake replicas, the brave japanese stick together and find each other’s care to make that human loneliness more bearable; And by sharing and supporting each other in these hard times, they bring dignity and beauty to our human existence.
